STANFORD, Calif. -- No. 5 Northwestern concluded its fall season Sunday with a fifth-place finish among the strong 17-team field at the Stanford Intercollegiate at The Stanford Golf Course while establishing a program-record 54-hole tournament score.
NU entered Sunday in fifth place and remained there after firing a final round 1-under 283 to give it a 54-hole total of 1-over 853 (282-288-283). That 853 blew away the previous school record for a 54-hole event of 864, established during a team victory in the spring at the 2014 Hurricane Invitational.
Northwestern finished two strokes behind No. 1 Washington in fourth place while No. 6 USC and No. 3 Stanford tied for the team title at 15-under par, one shot ahead of third-place No. 8 UCLA. That NU set a program record for total score (granted, on a par-71 course) reveals just how strong the top of the field especially was at the Intercollegiate.
The entirety of the 17-team field at the Stanford Intercollegiate was ranked in the top-100 in the first Golfstat.com rankings of the season released prior to the event and included five of the top-10 schools in No. 1 Washington, No. 3 Stanford, No. 5 Northwestern, No. 6 USC and No. 8 UCLA.
Freshman Hannah Kim (Chula Vista, Calif./Otay Ranch) and junior Suchaya Tangkamolprasert (Bangkok, Thailand/Bromsgrove International School) led Northwestern on Sunday with rounds of 2-under 69. Kim came into Sunday after back-to-back even-par 71s in the first two rounds, but was able to take her score lower courtesy of a 3-birdie, 2-bogey performance that included a 2-under 34 on the back nine. Kim finished in 12th overall at 2-under 211 (71-71-69).
Tangkamolprasert was 1-over following the front nine Sunday and made three birdies on the back en route to a homebound 3-under 33 and a closing 69. She moved up to 24th place with the effort to finish at 1-over 214 (72-73-69).
Sophomore Kacie Komoto (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou) fought off a double bogey at No. 6 Sunday with birdies at Nos. 5 and 8. Two additional bogeys at holes No. 9 and 11 got her to 2-over par, where she remained the rest of the way in for a final round 2-over 73. Komoto placed 21st overall at even-par 213 (69-71-73).
Senior Hana Lee (Hacienda Heights, Calif./Wilson) bounced back from a disastrous second-round 82 to record a counting 1-over 72 Sunday. Lee was 1-under through 12 holes in the final round before making back-to-back bogeys at Nos. 13 and 14. Rather that succumb to the bogey bug from Saturday, Lee stabilized to par her way home for a 10-stroke improvement from her previous day. Combined with a 1-under 70 in the first round, Lee finished 58th at 11-over 224 (70-82-72).
Junior Kaitlin Park (Tustin, Calif./Beckman) birdied her first hole of the final round, but found trouble from there on in for a closing 6-over 77. Park placed 69th at 14-over 227 (77-73-77).
Freshman Sarah Cho's (San Diego, Calif./Torrey Pines) had a solid round in her tournament played as an individual, carding an even-par 71 to finish 31st in the standings at 3-over 216 (73-72-71).
Northwestern now is off until beginning the spring portion of the season Feb. 15-17 at the Lady Puerto Rico in Rio Mar, P.R.
