No. 9 Wildcats Nipped by No. 14 Wolverines, 2-1

Oct. 17, 2014

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- No. 9 Northwestern was bumped from sole possession of first place in the Big Ten on Friday night at Ocker Field as it was edged 2-1 by No. 14 Michigan.

The Wildcats fall to 4-1 in conference play while the Wolverines improve to 5-1. Maryland is also tied with Northwestern in the standings at 4-1.

Michigan dominated possession throughout the first half, but it was the Wildcats who got on the scoreboard first. Charlotte Martin's entry from the top of the circle was tipped by Dominique Masters and trickled past Sam Swenson to give NU the 1-0 lead at 7:36.

The Wolverines continued to put the pressure on the Wildcats throughout the remainder of the half but the Northwestern defense held strong and prevented the host from cashing in on each of their first six penalty corner attempts. However, Michigan's seventh corner of the stanza eventually provided the equalizer as Leslie Smith scored at 31:19 to make it 1-1. Ainsley McCallister and Veerle Lubbers were credited with assists on the play.

Michigan finished the opening 35 minutes of play with commanding edges of 9-1 in shots and 8-0 in penalty corners.

The 'Cats picked up their attack to begin the second half as they earned their first corner of the match four minutes into the period. Swenson came up with back-to-back saves of Isabel Flens and Masters to keep the match tied.

A light rain began to fall early in the second half and it eventually turned into a downpour making the conditions difficult for both teams.

The Wolverines got their second goal off of a corner in the match to take the lead with 13:58 remaining. A perfectly executed corner resulted in Emy Guttman tipping in a pass into the top corner of the goal, giving the hosts a 2-1 lead.

Northwestern nearly got the tying goal with eight minutes left as Masters' shot off of a penalty corner got behind Swenson, but the shot was saved off the goalline. The Wildcats earned one more corner with 4:30 left, but NU was unable to get a shot off.

Michigan finished the match with advantages of 12-7 in shots and 11-5 in corners. The 'Cats responded from their slow start to hold edges of 6-3 in shots and 5-3 in corners in the second half.

Northwestern continues its road swing on Sunday as it travels to Michigan State. The contest is slated to get underway at 11 a.m. Central time.
