EVANSTON, Ill. -- Kicking off a milestone alumni weekend for Northwestern women's soccer, the current Wildcats battled a talented Purdue squad into double overtime Friday night at Lakeside Field before ultimately falling, 2-1. The visitors managed to push across the game-winner with five minutes remaining in the second OT period to steal a win in Northwestern's (4-3-2) Big Ten home-opener.

The Boilermakers, who entered the weekend as the Big Ten leader in shots per game, opened their scoring account 23 minutes into the game. From 10 yards out, Purdue's Mollie Kuramoto lofted an arcing ball just out of the reach of NU goalkeeper Lauren Clem and into the upper right corner of the frame. It was Kuramoto's first tally of the season.

But Northwestern senior Sami Schrakamp provided the equalizer only five minutes later with a chip over Purdue netminder Erika Yohn, Schrakamp's second goal of the year and fourth of her career. Sophomore Addie Steiner was credited with her first assist of 2014 on the play, raising her team-leading season points total to 13.

Schrakamp nearly provided a go-ahead goal later in the first half when she directed a strike toward the left corner, but her effort went just wide of the bar as the teams entered halftime knotted at one apiece.

Both teams recorded three shots over the final 45 minutes of regulation but were unable to find the back of the net, sending the match to extra time.

In the first overtime, Northwestern's Georgia Waddle posted the Wildcats' lone attempt on goal but sent her header over the crossbar in the 98th minute.

After the teams changed ends, Purdue threatened with a corner kick that was punched clear by Clem. But the Boilermakers collected the loose ball and moments later it was Purdue's Andrea Petrina striking for her first goal of the year and the game-winner.

For the game, Northwestern outshot the visitors by an 11-10 margin.

The Wildcats, who this weekend are marking the 20th anniversary of Northwestern women's soccer's inaugural season, will try to earn their first Big Ten victory of 2014 on Sunday when they play host to Indiana. Start time is slated for Noon CT at Lakeside Field.
