Barrett Secures Bronze at FIE African Zonal Championships

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Despite the fact that the Wildcats are idle for the summer, Northwestern's Juliana Barrett has continued to produce prolific results on the international stage. The sophomore recently secured a bronze medal in women's individual epée at the International Fencing Federation's (FIE) Africa Zone Championships in Cape Town, South Africa.
Barrett, who holds dual citizenship in the United States and South Africa, was the only member of her nation's team to obtain individual hardware. As an epée squad, South Africa took home a silver medal and toppled a strong contingent from Egypt to do so. The epeeists posted the top team result in Cape Town amongst all South African squads.
Thanks in large part to a strong showing at the zonal championships, Barrett has vaulted up the FIE rankings to No. 52. After completing her inaugural campaign with the Wildcats, Barrett returned to Bloemfontein, South Africa in May and captured a national championship in senior women's epée.
