EVANSTON, Ill. -- On Friday July 19, thirteen Northwestern student-athletes representing the football, golf, tennis, softball, soccer and swimming teams attended a career trek organized by NU for Life. NU for Life is a program within the athletic department dedicated to the professional development of Northwestern student-athletes. Career treks are visits designed to expose student-athletes to a company's mission, function and workplace environment. On July 19, students attended information sessions with investment banking and asset management firm William Blair and investment bank and mutual fund firm, Ariel Investments.

At William Blair, student-athletes were greeted by Phil Reitz, NU football alumnus, class of 1980. Ryan Daniels, NU football class of '97, Bill Semmer, Kellogg School graduate, Mike Balkin, NU tennis alumnus, and Mark Fuller spoke to the student-athletes about equity research, sales and trading, corporate finance, investment management and the average day of an employee at an investment banking firm.

Brad Phillips, NU football alumnus and 2008 graduate, talked about William Blair's summer investment analyst program. Pat Hickey, current NU student and football player, is spending this summer working as an analyst at William Blair and shared his experiences with the student-athletes.

After William Blair, the career trekkers took the `L' to their next location, Ariel Investments. Students were welcomed to Ariel by current interns, Todd Trubey, who holds a master's and PhD from Northwestern, and Ariel Investments founder and CEO John Rogers. After meeting the current interns, the majority of whom are student-athletes from all over the country, the Northwestern students learned about Ariel Investments' history, business philosophy and responsibilities as an investment banking and mutual fund firm. Students received a tour of the Ariel offices before saying their thank-yous and heading back to Evanston.

NU for Life's next career trek will be on Friday, July 26 at creative communications and advertising agency Leo Burnett in downtown Chicago.
