EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern associate head fencing coach Ed Kaihatsu was recently profiled by ABC7 Chicago for a segment on Asian Influences as part of the station's Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month celebration.

Kaihatsu sat down with ABC7's Linda Yu to discuss the sport of fencing and what it takes to be a successful competitor, coach and father. The segment aired during the 4 p.m. newscast on Thursday, May 23.

Kaihatsu came to Northwestern in 1989 and has worked side-by-side with head coach Laurie Schiller ever since. The duo has helped the Wildcats to 14 consecutive top-10 finishes at the NCAA Championships, including a ninth-place showing this spring in San Antonio, Texas.

As a collegiate fencer himself, Kaihatsu garnered first team All-America accolades and a Big Ten championship during his final campaign in 1983 at the University of Illinois.
