Juliana Barrett Wins South African Senior National Championship

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern freshman Juliana Barrett traveled to her home country of South Africa on May 18-19 and returned to campus in Evanston, Ill. as the senior women's epée national champion.

The South African Amateur Fencing Association (SAAFA) held the 2013 Senior Nationals at the University of the Free State in Bloemfontein, the judicial capital of South Africa, over the weekend. Barrett, who holds dual citizenship in South Africa and the United States, has placed first in the deep field of 27 fencers.

Barrett, who represents the club TFS Johannesburg, has placed first in senior women's epée at the last three national qualifying competitions she has competed in. For more information on Barrett's success, visit the SAAFA web site here.

As a newcomer for the Wildcats in 2012-13, the New York City, native picked up 12 wins in dual competition for Northwestern, including nine over a two-day span at the NU Duals on Nov. 16 & 17.
