Junior Women's Foil Results

BALTIMORE, Md. -- Three freshmen foilists hit the strips at Junior Olympic Championships for the junior women's foil event Friday and all three placed in the top. Mikela Goldstein led the bunch with an seventh-place finish, two spots ahead of her teammate, Charlotte Sands. Jen Yamin rounded out the NU contingent and she placed 20th in the field of nearly 150 fencers.

All three 'Cats had strong showings in pool play. Sands went undefeated in six bouts and earned the second seed for the direct elimination portion of the event. Yamin went 6-1 and Goldstein finished third in her pool with a mark of 4-2.

Sands cruised into the round of 16 Friday, but found herself on the wrong side of a 15-13 score against Quinn Crum. Goldstein and Yamin were on the same side of the bracket and rode a collision course to face one another in the round of 32. Goldstein defeated Yamin, 15-13 and then beat Hellary Zhang by an identical score to move into the quarterfinals.

Goldstein's triumphant run ended against Jessie Laffey, who beat the Wildcat, 15-10.

Two events will take place simultaneously inside the spacious convention center on Saturday morning beginning at 7 a.m. CT. Five individuals will enter the junior women's epée event, led by the seventh-seeded Courtney Dumas. Four of Dumas' younger Northwestern teammates, Helen Foster, Haley Hart, Olivia Lim and Kaitlyn Wallace also qualified for the individual tournament.

While the epeeists duke it out, Goldstein, Sands and Yamin will team up for the junior women's team foil tournament Saturday. The Wildcats have secured the second overall seed for that event.
