EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern freshman Lauren Abruzzo has been named to the 2013-14 Junior National Team by USA Swimming.
Abruzzo (Denver, Colo./Kent Denver) made the US national Junior Team in the Open Water 10K category.
The selection criteria takes into account athletes with the top six fastest times, in Olympic events only, from the combined results of all USA Swimming or FINA sanctioned meets from Jan. 1, 2013 to Sept. 2, 2013, using times from the prelims, semifials and A, B and C finals. All 2013 FINA World Junior Championships Team members are selected to this roster as well.
The entire list, which can be viewed here, features Olympic medalist Lia Neal.
Abruzzo is coming off her Big Ten Freshman of the Week performance at the TYR Invitational held at Northwestern's Norris Aquatics Center from Nov. 22 to Nov. 24.
Abruzzo posted NCAA “B” cut times in the 500-yard freestyle (4:46.11), 400-yard individual medley (4:18.56) and 1,650-yard freestyle (16:10.40) at the TYR Invitational, as Northwestern finished in first place competing against nine schools over the weekend. Her 1,650-yard freestyle time set a new school and pool record, while her 500-yard freestyle time was also a Norris Aquatics Center pool record.
