EVANSTON, Ill. - After splitting the Big Ten regular season title in 2012 between the schools, No. 13 Penn State defeated No. 19 Northwestern 2-1 in double overtime Sunday to clinch the 2013 Big Ten regular season championship outright.

With Northwestern leading 1-0, the Nittany Lions' Jordan Tyler tied the game with just 1:47 remaining in regulation. Tyler scored on a header to tie the game 1-1 and force overtime.

The game went into double overtime when Tyler scored his second goal of the game, and fifth of the season at the 108:30 mark, shooting left off a cross from five yards out to score the game winning goal for Penn State.

It was Northwestern's fourth consecutive game to go to double overtime and fifth 2OT match in the `Cats last six contests. Overall, Northwestern has played into an extra period in six of their last seven contests.

After a scoreless first half, Penn State rallied for the come-from-behind victory after Northwestern scored the game's first goal in the game's 59th minute.

Sophomore Joey Calistri got NU on the scoreboard after taking a pass from fellow sophomore Cole Missimo and scoring off his back heel and the `Cats led 1-0.

It was Calistri's 11th goal of the season and 20th in his Northwestern career. The 2013 Big Ten goals and points leaders this season ranks tied for eighth place in Northwestern school history with 20 career goals, tying Andy McDermott (1994-97) and Jim Muldoon (1985-88).

Calistri's 11 goals this season is also tied for the eighth most single season total in NU history, and the most in a single season since Matt Eliason recorded 13 goals in 2009.

After making his NCAA debut last week against Ohio State, goalkeeper Zak Allen recorded two saves for the `Cats against PSU. The Nittany Lions outshot NU 14-9 and 4-3 with shots on goal.

Calistri's goal came on his only shot in the game, while seniors Lepe Seetane (3) and Chris Ritter (2) registered multiple shots for the Wildcats.

NU returns to Lakeside Field on Wednesday, Oct. 30 against Loyola Chicago for the `Cats first home match since Oct. 12.

The Wildcats host `Kick or Treat' on the Halloween eve match. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. CT. The night includes free admission to all fans dressed in a Halloween costume and Northwestern will be giving away free candy. There will be a costume contest, where the winner will receive free entry to the 2014 Northwestern Soccer Commuter Camp. (The winner must be in eight grade and under).
