Junior Women's Foil Results

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Two Northwestern fencers opened the action at the January North American Cup in Louisville, Ky., Friday. One freshman placed seventh in the talent-rich junior women's foil event, while her teammate placed 27th on the day.

Jen Yamin opened the day by going undefeated in six pool bouts as she secured the 12th seed and a first-round bye in the direct elimination portion of the competition. The Allendale, N.J., native cruised to the quarterfinals with a trio of 15-9 triumphs. In her quarterfinal bout, Yamin was narrowly edged, 13-12, in a thrilling bout against Niki McKee. Her seventh-place finish marked her top showing at a North American Cup since joining the Northwestern program in the fall.

Another newcomer, Mikela Goldstein had a strong day on the strips Friday as she battled to finish 27th in the field of nearly 150 fencers. Goldstein went 4-2 in her pool, good for a second-place finish. In direct elimination, Goldstein dominated her opening-round opponent by the tune of 15-1 before winning her next bout, 15-7. In the round of 32, Goldstein dropped a tough battle against Kasey Iverson, 15-11.

Four more Wildcats will be in action Saturday afternoon in the junior women's epée event. Courtney Dumas, Helen Foster, Kaitlyn Wallace and Juliana Barrett will be in action beginning at approximately 12:30 p.m. CT. For updated results throughout the day, click here.
