GREENSBORO, N.C.
- With four individuals in the top 15, Northwestern surged to the top of the leaderboard after the first round of the Bryan National Collegiate played at the Bryan Park Golf and Enrichment Center in Greensboro, N.C.

Northwestern is in first thanks to a solid opening round score of 2-over 290, which ties for the second-lowest round of the season for the 'Cats (289 at Dale McNamara, 290 at Dick McGuire Invitational). NU has a two-stroke lead on second place South Carolina (292) and is three up on Tennessee (293). In total, NU had 11 birdies in the first day of competition to finish on top of the 17-team field that includes 11 teams ranked (eight in the top 30) ahead of the Wildcats in the latest Golfstat Women's Rankings.

After tying for first at the Mountain View Collegiate, junior Lauren Weaver (Scottsdale, Ariz./Cactus Shadows) continues to put up impressive scores, finishing under par yet again and is tied for second. Weaver had three rounds under par at the Mountain View and stretched that streak to four as she shot a 1-under 71 in Friday's first 18. Beginning on the 10th hole, Weaver birdied on hole 12 but bogeyed the 17th, finishing even through the back nine. She added two more birdies on the front nine and bogeyed hole eight to finish 1-under, just one stroke behind tournament leader Katie Burnett of South Carolina (2-under 70).

Freshmen Brittany Mai (Poway, Calif./Poway), Hana Lee (Hacienda Heights, Calif./Wilson) and sophomore Devon Brown (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Cathedral Catholic) all sit in a tie for 13th, shooting a 1-over 73 through the first 18. Mai had a strong start to the tournament and was in first place for a majority of the opening round, posting a 2-under on the back nine. She birdied holes 12 and 13 and began the front nine with a birdie on hole No. 1. Mai encountered some trouble on holes four, seven and eight, but remained in the top 15 after the first round, at 1-over 73.

Beginning on the 10th hole, Lee birdied on the 11th but bogeyed on 13 and 16 to shoot 1-over through her first nine. She had a better showing on the front nine, with a birdie on hole No. 4 and finished even after bogeying on No. 8.

Brown had two bogeys and a birdie (No. 13) on the back nine to start at 1-over but bogeyed just once and added a birdie (No. 2) to finish the front nine even.

Senior Alex Lederhausen (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) rounded out the group of five NU competitors. She finished the first round at 8-over 80 and is in a tie for 72nd.

Northwestern looks to stay on top of the leaderboard as the second round of the Bryan National Collegiate begins tomorrow at 7:20 a.m. CT.
