EVANSTON, Ill. -- Fresh off its best finish at the Midwest Fencing Conference Championships since 2007, the Northwestern Wildcats will continue their postseason journey Saturday at the NCAA Regional Championships, hosted by Cleveland State University.

The Wildcats wrapped up the MFC Championships on March 4 with a second-place finish. Northwestern was edged by Ohio State for the top spot, but the 'Cats did topple the defending national champions, Notre Dame, on their home turf. NU's foil squad beat the Buckeyes to earn the gold medal, while Ohio State returned the favor in epée as they left the purple and white with a silver medal. Northwestern's sabre squad did not go home empty-handed either as that group earned a bronze medal last Sunday.

The individual pools took place Saturday at the Joyce Center Fieldhouse. The Wildcats dotted the medal stands that day, as well. Junior Kate Cavanaugh earned the gold medal in the women's epée by defeating ND's Ashley Severson, 15-10, in the final bout. Teammate Courtney Dumas lost to Severson in her semifinal bout, but the freshman rebounded to claim the bronze medal.

Two-time All-American Dayana Sarkisova was Northwestern's highest finisher for the team in the foil. The junior earned a second-place finish after narrowly falling against Notre Dame's Madison Zeiss. Devynn Patterson claimed a share of third place in foil, while Camille Provencal finished seventh.

Chloe Grainger won a share of third place in sabre, Northwestern's highest finish with that weapon.

The 'Cats will hit the strips at Woodling Gym on Saturday at 9 a.m. CST.
