Northwestern Falls to Nebraska, 8-1, in Series Finale

Northwestern now is 11-17 on the season after the loss, 0-3 in the Big Ten. Nebraska now has won its last eight games in a row and is 19-12 on the year, 3-0 in the conference.

In the top of the first Saturday afternoon, Emily Allard (Antioch, Calif./Deer Valley) singled to extend her current hitting streak to a season-best 13 games. She was called out trying to steal, though, later in the inning. With two outs, Adrienne Monka (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Rancho Cucamonga) also singled, but no runs came of the knocks for Northwestern.
Nebraska took the first lead of the game in the bottom of the first, parlaying a leadoff walk, single and then a one-out error into a pair of runs before starter Sammy Albanese (Belmont, Calif./Castilleja) ended the inning with a strikeout.
Northwestern cut the deficit in half with a run in the top of the second. Olivia Duehr (Antioch, Ill./Antioch) walked the lead off the inning before being erased on an Amy Letourneau (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic) fielder's choice grounder. Letourneau moved up on a productive Albanese groundout, then reached third when an Anna Edwards (La Canada, Calif./La Canada) grounder was booted for an error. Mari Majam (Pine Valley, Calif./Mountain Empire) then got the 2-out hit for the Wildcats with a soft liner over third to drive home Letourneau.
In the Northwestern half of the third, Monka was hit by a one-out pitch before Marisa Bast (Orange, Calif./Villa Park) pool cued a single just enough to get it between the fielder's up the middle. The next two batters, however, were retired to hold NU scoreless in the frame.
Aided by a pair of Northwestern errors, Nebraska loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the fourth. An RBI single and one-out, two-run double pushed the Huskers' lead to 5-1 and led to Letourneau entering the circle in relief of Albanese. Letourneau got the first batter she faced to pop out before four more unearned runs crossed the plate for an 8-1 Husker's advantage after four innings of play.
Jenny Tyler (Glendale, Ariz./Deer Valley) entered the circle in the fifth inning for Northwestern, retiring Nebraska quietly in the frame. After the Wildcats again were stymied at the plate in the top of the sixth, Tyler stranded a leadoff sixth-inning single for Nebraska to send the game to the seventh.
In that seventh, Albanese led off with a booming double to right center, but no further NU runs came in the game.
Albanese (1-3) took the loss, allowing seven runs (three earned) on five hits and three walks with two strikeouts. Letourneau threw two-thirds of an inning, giving up one unearned run on a hit and two walks. Tyler tossed 2.0 scoreless frames of relief, allowing just one hit and one walk.
