EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern senior goalkeeper Brianne LoManto (Rocky Point, N.Y./Miller Place), the nation's leader in goals against average this season, has been named the American Lacrosse Conference Defensive Player of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday.
LoManto recorded six saves in NU's 19-7 defeat of 19th-ranked and previously undefeated Massachusetts Saturday, with five of her saves coming in the first half when the Wildcats were working to build their lead. LoManto allowed just six goals in over 51 minutes of action, the seventh straight game to open the season in which she and her defense have kept their opponents to fewer than 10 goals.
LoManto boasts a goals against average of 5.29 -- making her the only goalie in the country with more than 300 minutes played and a GAA below 7.0 -- and a save percentage of 52.2 percent. LoManto now has 353 saves in her career between the pipes for the Wildcats.
Northwestern is preparing to host Vanderbilt at 3 p.m. Friday in the Wildcats' 2012 ALC opener.
