EVANSTON -- Northwestern closed out its two-day namesake duals by winning all four of its duals Sunday at the Henry Crown Sports Pavilion in Evanston, Ill. The Wildcats defeated UC-San Diego, ACC powers North Carolina and Duke and closed the competition with a brilliant shutout over Cal Tech.

The host 'Cats had a first-round bye to start the second day and welcomed UC-San Diego to strips one, two and three to begin Sunday. Head coach Laurie Schiller was able to utilize the team's outstanding depth and make several substitutions throughout the bout. Both the epée and sabre squads notched eight wins apiece in the 22-5 victory over UCSD.

The next test for Northwestern came against a familiar foe, the North Carolina Tar Heels. NU defeated UNC two weeks ago at the Philadelphia Invitational, 19-8. This time around on their home turf the Wildcats produced an identical result, winning 19-8. Against the Tar Heels, it was the foil squad that led the way for Northwestern by winning eight of its nine bouts.

Sunday's third matchup came against the Duke Blue Devils, a fellow top-10 team. Northwestern was able to sustain its early momentum and fight to a 17-10 triumph. The Wildcats won seven of nine bouts in both foil and epée to pave the way to victory.

Against Cal Tech, Schiller was again able to rest some of the squad's more experienced starters in favor of many underclassmen. The new insertions to the lineup did not disappoint as the 'Cats trounced their opponents, 27-0.

Northwestern will host another dual meet on Saturday, Feb. 11 at historic Patten Gymnasium on the school's campus. The Wildcats will fence 10 teams from around the Midwest including University of Chicago, Wisconsin, Illinois and more. The competition begins at 8 a.m. and admission is free.
