COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Northwestern began the 2012 dual season in dominant fashion on Saturday by posting six impressive wins and a first-place finish at the Western Invitational hosted by the Air Force Academy.
Northwestern dropped only nine of its 162 bouts on the day against talented teams from every corner of the country.
The Wildcats began the day with a clean sweep over Cal Tech, winning all three weapons by spotless scores of 9-0. NU also whitewashed Swarthmore later in the day with each squad posting a 9-0 triumph.
Northwestern also put up impressive totals in victories over UC - San Diego, host Air Force and Stanford Against those two schools, the 'Cats combined for an 26-1 mark in foil, 24-3 mark in epée and 24-3 in sabre.
NU wrapped up the Western Invitational with a win over the Florida Gators, 25-2.
The Wildcats finished first on the day followed by Stanford and UC - San Diego. The host Falcons came in fourth place and Florida and Swarthmore rounded out the field.
The 'Cats will be back in action next weekend, Jan. 13-16, at the USFA North American Cup in Portland, Ore. The next set of duals is set for Saturday, Jan. 21 at the Penn Invitational. On Sunday, Jan. 22, the Wildcats will be in New York City for the NYU Duals.
