North American Cup Results

PORTLAND, Ore.-- Three members of Northwestern's women's foil team competed Friday at the January North American Cup in Portland, Ore. Dayana Sarkisova placed 25th, Camille Provencal placed 54th and Devynn Patterson placed 65th in a strong field of 105 fencers.

In pool play, Provencal placed fourth with a record of 3-3 in pool one. Pool three produced identical results for Patterson as she won three and dropped three for a fourth place finish. Sarkisova was placed in pool 13 where she earned four victories to just two defeats, finishing third.

After receiving a first-round bye in the direct elimination round, Sarkisova fought past Kane Gladnick by a score of 15-10. In the next round, the Northwestern junior ran into the field's top seed, Lee Kiefer. Kiefer got the best of Sarkisova, 15-4, and eventually went on to claim the gold medal later in the day.

Provencal won her first direct elimination bout against Allison Berdichevsky, 15-10. In the next round she fell to Eleanor Harvey, 15-9. Harvey would eventually be ousted by Kiefer in the quarterfinals.

In her first bout in direct elimination of the competition, Patterson was narrowly edged out in a fierce battle against Gabrielle Dastoli, 12-11.

The January North American Cup continues Saturday with the Division I women's epée competition commences at 10:30 a.m. CST. Another trio of 'Cats, Junior Kendrick Mooney and freshmen Courtney Dumas and Rose Semmel, will compete in that event.
