EVANSTON, Ill. -- Reed Losee and Oliver Kupe notched goals and freshman Tyler Miller recorded his second consecutive shutout as the Northwestern men's soccer team blanked UMKC 2-0 at Lakeside Field Monday afternoon.

The teams played amid blustery conditions along the shores of Lake Michigan with winds consistently blowing above 20 miles per hour throughout the match. NU had the wind at its back in the the opening half and took advantage just under 11 minutes into the contest.

Sophomore left back Scott Lakin played a perfect cross from the left flank into the box to a streaking Losee for a header past UMKC goalkeeper Kevin Corby to give the hosts the lead.

The Wildcats held a commanding 11-2 edge in shots over the first 45 minutes of play, but the Kangaroos were able to keep Northwestern from denting the scoreboard again in the opening stanza to remain within striking distance.

Despite having to go into the stiff breeze in the second half, NU wasted little time in padding its lead after the intermission. Chris Ritter played a ball in the midfield to Kupe who did the rest. The senior forward beat a defender at the top of the box and then rifled a shot past Corby to the back post to give Northwestern a 2-0 advantage.

That was more than enough support for Miller, the reigning Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week. The freshman needed to make just one save in the match to earn his second consecutive shutout in as many career appearances. He teamed up with the rest of the Northwestern squad to limit UMKC to just five shots in the contest.

Overall, the Wildcats held a 15-5 edge in shots and 7-6 in corner kicks.

NU returns to action at 2:30 p.m. Friday as it opens play at the NIU adidas Invitational in DeKalb by taking on Portland.
