EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern freshman goalkeeper Tyler Miller (Woodbury, N.J./Bishop Eustace) has been recognized as the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week for posting a shutout in the Wildcats' match against No. 7 California last Thursday.
He is the first Northwestern player to earn the honor since goalkeeper Misha Rosenthal picked it up Oct. 26, 2009.
Miller was undaunted in making his first collegiate appearance in goal in the contest. He played all 110 minutes in goal in the double-overtime scoreless draw, making a pair of saves. The match was played at Toyota Park in Bridgeview, Ill., the home of the Chicago Fire of Major League Soccer.
Northwestern (1-1-1) returns to action at 2:15 p.m. Friday as it takes on Portland on the opening day of the NIU adidas Invitational in DeKalb, Ill.
