EVANSTON, Ill. – After a strong finish at the Dale McNamara Invitational during Northwestern's opening weekend of competition, the 'Cats travel to Albuquerque, N.M., Sunday and Monday for the 32nd annual Branch Law Firm Dick McGuire Invitational. The Wildcats will play 36 holes on Sunday, beginning with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. (CT), and finish the Invitational with the final round Monday at 9 a.m.
The 18-team field includes three teams ranked in the top 30 of the preseason Golf World/NGCA Poll: No. 22 Pepperdine, No. 26 Iowa State and No. 30 TCU. Last year at the Dick McGuire Invitational, Northwestern placed 11th out of 17 teams, finishing with a 38-over 914 (302-307-305) on the par-73, 6,187-yard course.
Northwestern is coming off a third-place finish at the Dale McNamara Invitational last weekend in Tulsa, Okla. Led by sophomore Devon Brown (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Cathedral Catholic) and her tie for fourth place finish, three of the five Wildcat competitors placed in the top 20. Brown tied some career marks with her 3-over 54-hole score of 219 (also scored 219 at the Lady Northern Invitational last season) and by shooting a 2-under 70 in the second round (also shot a 70 at the 2011 Big Ten Championships).
Freshman Hana Lee (Hacienda Heights, Calif./Wilson) made her Wildcat debut, finishing one stroke behind Brown at 4-over 220 and tied for sixth. Freshman Brittany Mai (Poway, Calif./Poway) also made her first appearance and shot a 7-over 223 to tie for 15th place. Mai began the Invitational with a 5-over 77, shot a 4-over 76 in the second round and finished her first collegiate tournament with a 2-under 70 in the final round.
Junior Lauren Weaver (Scottsdale, Ariz./Cactus Shadows) placed 30th, finishing with an 11-over 227 (78-78-71) and senior Alex Lederhausen (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) rounded out the Wildcats at one shot behind Weaver with a 12-over 228 to tie for 31st.
