EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern junior midfielder Chris Ritter (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) has been tabbed the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week the conference office announced Monday. It is the first such honor of his career.
He is the first NU player to earn the honor since Matt Eliason on Oct. 26, 2009.
Ritter guided Northwestern to a pair of shutout wins while scoring two goals as the Wildcats claimed the title at their own Lakeside Classic over the weekend. For his efforts, Ritter was named the tournament's most valuable player.
In Friday's 1-0 victory over UC Davis, he tallied the match's lone goal in the 13th minute of play. Against previously undefeated Xavier on Sunday, Ritter scored a first-half goal on a penalty kick to help lead the Wildcats to a 2-0 win. The win over the Musketeers came two days after they had handed 13th-ranked Northern Illinois its first loss of the season.
Northwestern (3-3-1) opens Big Ten play at 7 p.m. Saturday as it hosts Michigan State at Lakeside Field. NU students and fans are invited out to a pre-game Wildcat Alley fan festival.
NU students are invited to participate in a bags tournament, sponsored by Coke Zero. Twelve teams will win a free bags set. Also, all students will receive a free hot dog and bottle of Coke, courtesy of Vienna Beef and Coke. One lucky NU student will receive free books for the semester. Additionally, there will be inflatable games, face paint/tattoos, and an appearance by the Northwestern football team. The first 150 fans will in attendance receive a free Northwestern vuvuzela.
