EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern returns home to Lakeside Field this weekend as it hosts the annual Lakeside Classic. Following a match between Northern Illinois and Xavier at 5 p.m. Friday, the Wildcats take on UC Davis. Sunday's action pits NIU and UC Davis at 11:30 a.m. followed by the 'Cats battling Xavier.
Northwestern dropped a pair of heart-breaking matches during last weekend's NIU adidas Invitational in DeKalb, Ill. The Wildcats led Portland 1-0 late in Friday's contest, but allowed goals in the 86th and 88th minute. Oliver Kupe notched NU's first-half goal. Sunday's match with Valparaiso appeared headed for overtime, but the Crusaders posted the match's lone goal with just 17 seconds remaining in regulation to defeat the Wildcats. Nikko Boxall and Layth Masri represented the 'Cats on the all-tournament team.
The Aggies (2-1-2) have seen each of their last four matches go to overtime, including playing Cal State Bakersfield to a scoreless tie on Sunday. UC Davis has two wins and two ties to their credit despite scoring a total of just four goals in their first five matches. Goalkeeper Omar Zeenni sports a 0.53 goals-against average. Dwayne Shaffer has a 145-109-26 record in 15 seasons as the head coach of the Aggies.
Scouting Xavier
The Musketeers (3-0-0) are undefeated so far under second-year head coach Andy Fleming, a former Northwestern assistant. Xavier cruised to a 5-0 win over IPFW on Tuesday. James Weber came off the bench to score two goals. The Musketeers have shut out each of their first three opponents this season. Justin Marshall (seven saves) and Xavier have faced just eight shots on goal through their first three matches.
Series History
The Wildcats are facing UC Davis for the first time. Northwestern is 2-1 all-time against Xavier. NU won the last meeting 3-0 Sept. 14, 2008 in DeKalb, Ill., paced by two goals by Mark Blades.
