EVANSTON, Ill. -- After netting two key goals in No. 2 Northwestern's 12-10 come-from-behind victory over No. 3 Duke, freshman Kara Mupo has been named the American Lacrosse Conference Rookie of the Week, the third Wildcat freshman to earn the honor this season.
Mupo converted both of her free-position opportunities on the day to account for the two goals, the first coming on the heels of a three goal run by Duke. Northwestern was up 3-2 in the first half when Duke reeled off three consecutive goals in under three minutes, however Mupo's first goal closed the Blue Devil's lead to one and halted their momentum late in the half.
The freshman's second goal of the game, with 12:58 to play, tied the score at nine after the `Cats had trailed since over 12 minutes remained in the first half. This came in the midst of a 7-2 Wildcat scoring run to close the game, as the `Cats transformed an 8-5 deficit early in the second half into the final winning margin, 12-10.
Mupo also scooped up a ground ball and caused a turnover in addition to her fourth multi-goal effort of her rookie campaign. The high school teammate of standout goalie Brianne LoManto now has 11 goals on the season, placing her sixth on the team.
Classmates Alyssa Leonard and Kelly Rich were the first two Wildcat freshmen to garner ALC Rookie of the Week accolades.
Northwestern continues its challenging schedule this weekend, hosting two familiar nationally ranked foes from Pennsylvania at Lakeside Field. No. 15 Penn State first comes to Evanston for a Friday night ALC showdown at 7 p.m., before NU welcomes No. 8 Penn for a Sunday matinee set to begin at noon.
