INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Five Wildcats will take their talents to Columbus, Ohio for the 2011 NCAA Fencing Championships which take place March 24-27 at the French Field House and St. John Arena on the campus of Ohio State University. It is the seventh time in eight seasons Northwestern will have five fencers competing in the highly-anticipated event.
Two-time NCAA Championships participant Devynn Patterson leads a young but extremely talented contingent of Wildcats, which includes fellow foilist Dayana Sarkisova who is looking to repeat as an All-American in this go-round at NCAAs. Freshman phenom Dina Bazarbayeva, and sophomore standout Kate Cavanaugh both earned trips on the epée side while sophomore Chloe Grainger is NU's representative in the sabre.
Fencers will compete in a round-robin format of five-touch bouts. After the round-robin, the top-four fencers fence semifinal 15-touch bouts, with the winners fencing to determine first and second places, and the losers being awarded a tie for third place. Absolute ties for the seeding will be broken as follows: for positions one through three, by a coin toss; for position four, by a fence-off.
