DETROIT, Mich. -- Half a dozen Wildcats finished in the top 10 of their respective weapons, including three in the epée, at the NCAA Midwest Regionals Saturday. Northwestern was led by sophomore foilist Dayana Sarkisova who placed fourth.
NU's most outstanding team effort came the epée, led by a fourth-place effort from Kate Cavanaugh. Two other Wildcats finished on the heels of the sophomore, in freshman Dina Bazarbayeva and sophomore Karalina Collins who came in fifth and sixth, respectively.
Sophomore Chloe Grainger led the sabre contingent with an eighth-place showing. Devynn Patterson joined Sarkisova as NU's final top-10 finisher with a ninth-place performance in the foil. Patterson has qualified for the NCAA Championships in each of the last two seasons, while Sarkisova placed third in the event last year.
Head coach Laurie Schiller and his Wildcats will now have to sit and wait until Tuesday morning when the qualifiers for the 2011 NCAA Championships are announced. Those that do qualify will head to Columbus, Ohio, for the national tournament beginning Thursday, March 24 and running through Sunday, March 27.
