EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern commences on the spring portion of its 2011 schedule this weekend, heading to sunny Rio Mar, P.R. to compete in the 2011 Lady Puerto Rico, hosted by Purdue.

The Wildcats, ranked 43rd in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin rankings, are one of 18 teams in the competitive field, which includes three top-10 teams and nine ranked among the nation's top-30. Top-ranked Alabama, the 2010 Lady Puerto Rico champion, is back to defend its crown, with the fifth-ranked Boilermakers and ninth-ranked Georgia sitting among the top-10.

Eight different conferences will be represented at the Lady Puerto Rico, held at the Rio Mar Beach Resort. The Big Ten leads the way with five schools, including Purdue, Northwestern, Indiana, Michigan and Penn State. Iowa State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Texas Tech will represent the Big XII while Alabama, Auburn and Georgia will compete for the SEC. The ACC (Florida State, North Carolina State), Conference USA (SMU), MAC (Kent State), Pac-10 (Oregon) and Mountain West (TCU) will all have a showing this weekend as well.

Northwestern finished tied for sixth at last season's Lady Puerto Rico, compiling a 43-over 907 and shaving 23 strokes off its 2009 ninth-place finish at the Lady Puerto Rico. Lauren Weaver (Scottsdale, Ariz./Cactus Shadows) paced the Wildcats with a 6-over 222, including a 1-under 71 in round two, to place 16th in the individual standings.

The trip to Rio Mar marks the first competition for the Wildcats since competing at the Landfall Tradition in October. The Wildcats finished in the top-10 in three of its five fall tournaments, highlighted by a runner-up finish at the Lady Northern on Oct. 12.

Individually, Weaver has once again led Northwestern with a 73.73 scoring average and three top-10 finishes, including taking home the individual title at the Lady Northern. Alex Lederhausen (Hinsdale, Ill./Central) and Devon Brown (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Cathedral Catholic) have also competed in all five events thus far for the Wildcats, sitting second (75.47) and third (76.60) in scoring average.

The 54-hole tournament will be played over the course of three days, with a shotgun start at 7 a.m. CT Sunday and Monday and 6:30 a.m. CT Tuesday. Live scoring of the Lady Puerto Rico is available at Golfstat.com.
