EVANSTON, Ill. -- Seventh-ranked Northwestern closed out its host tournament with a 4-1 Sunday record at the Northwestern Duals at the Sports and Aquatic Center (SPAC). The Wildcats finished the two-day event with an overall record of 7-3, improving to 29-6 on the season.

After posting a 3-2 mark during competition Saturday, Northwestern pounced out to a quick start on Sunday, downing Stanford 20-7 behind an 8-1 effort from the sabre squad. The Wildcats then easily dispatched of North Carolina 26-1 as both the foil and sabre teams notched perfect 9-0 marks against the Tar Heels.

Northwestern then set its sights on fourth-ranked Princeton in the marquee women's matchup of the weekend. Both teams scored some key victories, but it was the Tigers that got the key touches when it counted, edging out the Wildcats 5-4 in both the epée and foil to seal the 16-11 victory.

But as it has done all season, Northwestern responded big after a tough defeat, routing a pair of Midwest Fencing Conference opponents in its final two matches of the day. The Wildcats blanked Detroit 27-0 before roaring past Cleveland State 23-4 to close out its weekend on the home strips.

All three weapons had productive afternoons for head coach Laurie Schiller's Wildcats as each posted a 4-1 mark on the day. The sabre led the way with an overall record of 38-7, with the foil edging out the epée with a 35-10 mark. On the weekend, the foil won eight of its 10 matches with both the epée and sabre finishing with a 7-3 record.

Northwestern upped its season record to 29-6, sitting one victory shy of recording its seventh consecutive 30-win season. The Wildcats look to achieve the feat next weekend, traveling to Durham, N.C. for the Duke Duals on Sunday, February 13.
