DURHAM, N.C. -- Seventh-ranked Northwestern recorded a pair of victories this weekend, taking down Duke 14-13 before defeating North Carolina 22-5 at the Duke Duals. With the wins, head coach Laurie Schiller's squad eclipses the 30-win mark for the seventh-straight season, improving to 31-6 on the year.
The Wildcats opened up the day taking on the host Blue Devils, gritting out a 14-13 victory behind a 6-3 performance by the foil squad. Northwestern's epée took a thrilling 5-4 win while the sabre team posted a 3-6 record, giving the Wildcats the one-bout decision. Camille Provencal (St. Paul, Minn./Central) led the way against the Blue Devils, posting a 3-0 record for the foil team.
One week after trouncing North Carolina 26-1 at the Northwestern Duals, the Wildcats took to the strips against the Tar Heels once again with a similar outcome, downing UNC 22-5. This time around, it was the epée that led the way with an 8-1 record while both the foil and sabre teams finished 7-2 against North Carolina. Annelise Eeman (St. Louis Park, Minn./St. Louis Park), Devynn Patterson (Seattle, Wash./Roosevelt) and Kate Cavanaugh (Milwaukee, Wis./Nicolet) each posted a 3-0 mark against the Tar Heels, with Patterson notching the 200th victory of her Wildcat career in the process.
Northwestern's epée and foil teams both finished the afternoon with a 13-5 mark, capturing the Duke Duals weapon titles. Individually, Patterson led the Wildcats with a 5-1 record, followed by Chloe Grainger (Decatur, Ga./Decatur), Provencal, Karalina Collins (Houston, Texas/Waltrip) and Nicole Tilley (Chandler, Ariz./Corona), who each posted a 4-1 mark in the day's pair of dual meets.
The Wildcats take a break from dual meet competition this weekend, traveling to Dallas, Texas, for the USFA National Junior Olympics Feb. 18-21. The 'Cats' final dual meet of the 2010-11 season then takes place at Patten Gymnasium on Feb. 26 and 27 as the Wildcats host the second installment of the Northwestern Duals.
