EVANSTON, Ill. -- Iowa used a 70 percent second-half shooting effort to steal an 86-75 decision from Northwestern Sunday afternoon at Welsh-Ryan Arena. Senior captain Beth Marshall led a trio of Wildcats in double-figures with 21 points and nine assists. Amy Jaeschke turned in her 12th double-double of the season with 19 points and 10 rebounds while Kendall Hackney chipped in 17 points.
"It was just a tale of two halves, and we didn't play any defense in the second," head coach Joe McKeown said. "You don't need Freud or Einstein to break it down-- we gave them wide-open shots. I'm embarrassed by our defense in the second half, that's the only word I can come up with."
Four minutes into the game with the score 7-5 in favor of the Hawks, Northwestern buckled down defensively and held Iowa scoreless for five minutes, while constructing a 9-0 run to take a 14-7 advantage. After a Hawkeye bucket snapped the unblemished run, the 'Cats proceeded to rattle off 10 more unanswered points and pull away, 24-9, with eight minutes to go in the half. Northwestern found scoring up and down the lineup during the 17-4 run, as five Wildcats combined to go 9-of-12 (75 percent) from the field.
Northwestern restricted Iowa to just a 29 percent first-half shooting clip and took a 34-23 lead into intermission, thanks to 14 points from Jaeschke. Scoring was well-balanced as six Wildcats had a stake in the 34 points and together, they combined to shoot 56 percent from the field. NU dominated on the glass, out-rebounding Iowa 23-12.
Three triples on consecutive possessions pulled Iowa to within five, 41-36, just four minutes into the second frame. Two minutes later on a lay up by Kelly Krei, the Hawkeyes took their first lead since the 16:15 mark of the first half.
Iowa matched its largest lead of the game at that point, a 10-point cushion, 68-58, with four minutes remaining in the game. Back-to-back triples by Marshall and Hackney pulled NU to within six, 70-64, at the 2:33 mark but Iowa answered on the other end with a three of its own.
After a flurry of scoring, Northwestern pulled to within four, 77-73, with just under a minute left but could not make up the difference.
Marshall' first triple of the game moved her into fifth on Northwestern's all-time three pointers made list. Additionally, Jaeschke's third carom scooted her into second place on NU's all-time rebounding list.
Northwestern is next in action at 6 p.m. CT Thursday when it travels to East Lansing for a bout with Michigan State.
