WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- After opening its season with a Big Ten road win two weeks ago at Illinois, Northwestern traveled in-conference again Saturday, falling at Purdue, 171-122.
Tough luck struck Northwestern right off the bat when its `A' 400 medley relay team was disqualified, leading to a clean sweep of the event by Purdue.

After a 1-2-3 Purdue finish in the 100 back, senior Jenny Wilson (Bethesda, Md./Sidwell Friends School) swam a very strong 1:03.02 in the 100 breast, coming in second behind a Purdue swimmer who posted an NCAA `B' provisional qualifying standard. Senior Kathleen Patterson (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) took third in the race with a 1:05.63.
Junior Meredith King (Louisville, Ky./duPont Manual) was the top finisher in a 3-4-5 NU effort in the 200 fly, turning in a time of 2:04.70. Purdue then took the top three spots in the 50 free with Marybeth Hall's (Brighton, Mich./Brighton) fourth-place 23.73 the top time for the Wildcats.

Coming out of the break, Powell was third in the 100 free with a 52.19 to lead Northwestern, then Meaghan Fenn's (New Rochelle, N.Y./The Ursuline School) NU-best 2:06.29 in the 200 back also was good for a third place finish.
Wilson crushed the field in the 200 breast to win by 3.58 seconds with a season-best 2:17.17. The Purdue swimmer who notched a `B' cut in the 100 breast was second, followed by NU's Patterson and her 2:21.66 in third.

In the 100 fly, senior Meghan Cavanaugh (Anchorage, Alaska/East Anchorage) trailed at the 50-yard mark, but closed hard and nearly pulled out the win. Her 56.46 earned second-place points for NU and was .14 of a second behind the event winner.
