Wildcats Host Illinois Junior Olympic Qualifier This Weekend

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern will have a handful of fencers in action on Sunday, Nov. 6 as those Wildcats take part in the Illinois Junior Olympic Qualifier event, which is being held inside historic Patten Gym on the Evanston, Ill. campus.
The Wildcats will send six to seven fencers to the competition. In the sabre event, freshman Claire Carson (Durham, N.C./CE Jordan) will participate and so too might Mary Regan (Woodbridge, Conn./Hopkins). In the épée, both Rose Semmel (Philadelphia, Pa/JR Masterman Lab and Demonstration School) and Sonali Patel will participate. Finally, a trio of fencers are expected to enter the foil competition including: Mary Spohn (Toluca Lake, Calif./Mayfield Senior), Tina Umanskiy (Cleveland, Ohio/Univ. of Chicago) and Sarah Bruhl (Fairfield, Conn./Ludlowe).
Twenty-five percent of the field, with a minimum of three entrants per weapon will qualify for the Junior Olympic National Championships. That event will be held Feb. 17-20 in Salt Lake City, Utah. One other Wildcat, freshman Courtney Dumas (Cleveland, Ohio/Hathaway Brown) has already qualified for the National Championships.
