CHANDLER, Ariz. -- Postseason accolades continue to roll in for Northwestern junior Chelsea Armstrong, who Monday, along with being tabbed as a first-team All-West Region honoree, was named a first-team Longstreth/NFHCA All-American.
After one of the most prolific seasons in NU field hockey history, Armstrong becomes the 18th Wildcat to garner first-team recognition, and the first to do so since Betsy Vance was selected following the 1995 season.
Already the reigning two-time Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year and a three-time first-team All-West Region and first-team All-Big Ten selection, Armstrong adds first-team All-American to her growing list of career laurels.
The native Australian set a career high, while leading all Big Ten players with 25 goals scored, adding seven assists to earn 57 points this season, good enough for fifth nationally in both points per game (2.62) and goals per game (1.14). After her stellar season, Armstrong's three-year total of 173 points scored and 71 career goals are both new program records.
Armstrong racked up a conference-best six game-winning goals during the 2011 season, and tallied three three-goal games, giving her seven hat-tricks in her career. She is one of only three players out of the Big Ten to land on the NFHCA's first-team All-American squad, joining Kelsey Amy (Penn State) and Jenn Sciulli (Ohio State).
