UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.-- Northwestern wrapped up the 2011 portion of its schedule on Saturday by placing five fencers in the top 16 at the Garret Open in University Park, Pa. led by Dayana Sarkisova, who finished ninth out of 50 fencers in the foil.

"We're disappointed that we didn't place anyone in the top eight today, but we learned a lot about what we need to work on moving forward," said Northwestern head coach Laurie Schiller. "We faced a lot of the top teams from around the country here today, the toughest in the NCAA. We competed well and now we know what we need to work on as individuals that will ultimately help us move forward as a team."

Sarkisova led the way for NU as she placed ninth out of 50 foilists in Happy Valley. Chloe Grainger (Decatur, Ga./Decatur) was the top finisher in the sabre for the Wildcats as she finished 13th out of 42 fencers with that weapon.

The most success for the Wildcats on Saturday came with the épée as three fencers placed in the top-13. Kate Cavanaugh (Milwaukee, Wis./Nicolet) placed 10th, while freshman Courtney Dumas (Cleveland, Ohio/Hathaway Brown) continued her successful fall campaign with an 11th-place finish. Fellow 'Cat Kendrick Mooney (Arcadia, Calif./Arcadia) concluded the day 13th out of 46 entrants.

Northwestern will be idle now until the calendar turns to 2012. The Wildcats are scheduled to open the dual season on Saturday, January 7th when they travel west for the Air Force Duals.
