EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern will welcome seven schools to its Norris Aquatics Center this Friday through Sunday, Nov. 18-20, for the TYR Invitational, which serves as the conclusion to the fall portion of the 2011-12 season schedule.
In addition to Northwestern, UIC, Kenyon College, Cleveland State and Missouri State all have men's and women's teams entered in the TYR Invite. Illinois, Nebraska and Iowa State also are sending women's squads for a total of eight women's teams and five men's in the meet.
Action gets underway each morning with a preliminary session at 9 a.m. CT followed by finals sessions each night beginning at 5 p.m. CT. Sunday's finals session will start at 3 p.m. CT. Live results will be available courtesy of Director of Aquatics Ed Martig and his staff by going to www.fitrec.northwestern.edu. A complete list of events for each day can be found in the .pdf at the top of this release.
Northwestern's women's team dominated at last season's TYR Invitational, compiling 1,495 points to best a field of six entries, which included 2011 participants Iowa State, Cleveland State, Kenyon and UIC. Individually, CSU's Alice Sommerville earned high point honors followed by NU senior Kathleen Patterson (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley).
NU also won the 2010 TYR Invitational on the men's side, racking up 1,155 points behind top-scorer Sean Mathews -- who graduated in 2011 -- and No. 2 high scorer Charlie Rimkus (Tustin, Calif./Beckman). Four of the five teams that participated in the 2010 TYR are back in 2011 with Missouri State as the lone newcomer.
The Northwestern women enter this weekend with a dual-meet record of 3-2 overall. The Wildcats most recently swept a double-dual meet Saturday, Nov. 12, against both UIC and North Dakota in their home pool. The NU men are 4-1 overall after also sweeping the Flames and Fighting Sioux Saturday in addition to a Friday, Nov. 11, conference victory over Wisconsin.
