EVANSTON, Ill. - Success was plentiful Saturday at SPAC as Northwestern's fencing team, under the direction of head coach Laurie Schiller, lifted the lid on the 2011-12 season Saturday by hosting the Burton Open. The Wildcats captured gold medals in all three weapons and silver medals in both the sabre and foil.
Chloe Grainger (Decatur, Ga./Decatur) captured the top spot in the sabre as she knocked off her teammate, Alicia Gurrieri(Medford, N.J./Moorsetown Friends), in the tightly contested final between friendly foes. Grainger prevailed, 15-13. Grainger placed 21st in the sabre at last year's NCAA Championship.
Claire Carsonplaced sixth with the sabre for the 'Cats.
Another pair of NU fencers claimed the top two positions in the foil. In the final, Dayana Sarkisova (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills) bested teammate Devynn Patterson(Seattle, Wash./Roosevelt) by a final score of 15-8. Sarkisova is coming off a sophomore campaign in which she garnered All-American honorable mention accolades, while Patterson made her third consecutive NCAA tournament appearance.
Also placing in the top-10 with the foil for Northwestern were Camille Provencal (St. Paul, Minn/Central) tied for third and Rebecca Grohman(South Orange, N.J./Columbia) placed 10th.
Finally in the women's epée, Courtney Dumas claimed the top spot with a thrilling 15-12 victory over Mason Speta from the Windy City Fencing Club. However, six of the other top-10 spots were won by the Wildcats at the Burton Open. Dina Bazarbayeva (Houston, Texas/Lamar) tied Kendrick Mooney(Arcadia, Calif./Arcadia) for third place.
In all, the 'Cats placed 11 fencers among the top-ten in their respective weapons Saturday.
