Wildcats Ranked Seventh in First USFCA College Fencing Coaches Poll

EVANSTON, Ill. -- The first USFCA College Fencing Coaches Poll of the 2011 season has been released as Northwestern finds itself ranked seventh in the first installment of the poll. The Wildcats are off to a 5-0 start in dual meet competition after sweeping all five opponents at the UC San Diego West Invitational on January 8.
Northwestern is one of three Midwest Fencing Conference schools among the top-10, with Notre Dame occupying the top spot and Ohio State checking in at 10th. Penn State, Harvard, Princeton and St. John's are among the top-five with Columbia, Penn and Temple rounding out the top-10.
The Wildcats will get a first-hand look at a handful of the nation' top-10 this weekend, going head-to-head against five of the remaining nine teams in the poll. Northwestern faces Notre Dame, Columbia and Ohio State at the NYU Invitational Saturday before taking on Penn and Temple at the Philadelphia Invitational Sunday. The Wildcats also meet up with NYU and Yale, both of which were receiving votes in the poll.
The second installment of the Coaches Poll will be released around the week of the USFA National Junior Olympics (Feb. 18-21), with the final poll being released following the NCAA Regionals March 12-13.
