SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- Ninth-ranked Northwestern surrendered a goal in the 39th minute and was never able to pull level, falling 1-0 at San Francisco Friday night in its 2010 season-opener. The loss snapped Northwestern's run of seven straight season-openers without a defeat.
The Wildcats were not without their chances to score in the game, firing 10 shots overall and creating nine corner kick opportunities compared to San Francisco's four. Junior forward Oliver Kupe led NU in shots on goal for the evening with two.
Earning his first career start between the pipes for Northwestern was sophomore goalkeeper Jonathan Harris, who stopped four USF shots on the night. The lone shot on frame that Harris was unable to reach came off the boot of San Francisco's Tanner Smith, who settled the ball near the top of the box and planted the ball in the upper left corner of the net for the game's only goal.
Northwestern generated plenty of pressure while searching for the equalizer, at one point earning five corner kicks in a span of just over four minutes early in the second half. NU continued to force the issue in USF's end of the field down the stretch, with Piero Bellizzi forcing a save by goalkeeper Brendan Roslund in the 85th minute.
NU's Jack Hillgard, Jarrett Baughman and Pat Gibson all recorded shots in the game's final five minutes but saw their attempts either sail high or be blocked at the point of contact as the Dons preserved their victory in front of a home crowd of 767.
Northwestern will remain on the West coast for a Sunday tilt at Saint Mary's. Start time is scheduled for 2 p.m. CT.
