Armstrong, Franklin Receive Weekly Big Ten Honors

EVANSTON, Ill. -- On the heels of an impressive 3-2 upset of sixth-ranked Ohio State, both Wildcat goal-scorers in the game were spotlighted by the Big Ten Monday for their roles in the win. Chelsea Armstrong, who was able to open and close the game's scoring, was named the league's Offensive Player of the Week while Catherine Franklin was tabbed the Big Ten Freshman of the Week.
For Armstrong, the award is her second weekly laurel of the season and the fourth of her career. The sophomore from Australia put NU on the board 25 minutes into the contest when she got her stick to a loose ball in the middle of the circle and slotted it past OSU goalie Ally Tunitis.
Nearly 10 minutes later, Franklin came off the bench to score a critical goal on the final play of the first half, notching her first career goal while giving NU a 2-0 intermission lead in the process. Franklin now has four points on the season (1g, 2a).
After the Buckeyes rallied to tie things at 2-2, Armstrong came up huge with her league-leading 13th goal of the season, blasting home a penalty corner for her fourth game-winning score of 2010. She now ranks eighth all-time at NU with 35 career goals and currently stands seventh in the nation with 1.18 points per game.
No. 6 Ohio State represented the most highly ranked team NU has defeated since it overcame fourth-ranked Penn State in 1997.
With an 8-3 mark through 11 games, Northwestern returns to action Sunday when it hosts No. 17 Kent State. Start time is scheduled for noon at Lakeside Field and all matches offer free admission for all fans.
