Northwestern Weekly Release -- Sept. 16 ![]()
EVANSTON, Ill. -- Three full weeks into the 2010 season, Northwestern takes to its home turf for the first time this weekend against a pair of Mid-American Conference foes. NU, which emerged from its season-opening road swings with a 5-3 mark, meets Ball State on Friday before hosting Miami (Ohio) at Lakeside Field Sunday.
Beyond coming out to support the 'Cats in person at the game -- which offers free parking and admission -- there are plenty of ways to track all of this weekend's action online. Live streaming video of both games will be available on NUsports.com's All-Access player along with Gametracker and in-game commentary on Twitter. Conference Supremacy
Northwestern's offensive outburst in St. Louis vaulted it toward the top of the Big Ten in several categories, both individually and as a team. The 'Cats sit atop the league in goals per game (3.50) and assists per game (2.88) and are less than a tenth of a point away from the conference lead for shots per game (19.25). On the individual side, Chelsea Armstrong leads all Big Ten players with her totals of nine goals, 24 points and shots (56). Armstrong is third in the league with six assists while senior Stacy Uchida is tied for fourth with five.
Platoon in the Cage
NU head coach Tracey Fuchs has what coaches commonly refer to as a good problem when deciding on a starting goalkeeper. Sophomore Amanda Wirth has gone 3-2 in five starts this season while senior Katie Lynch is 2-1 and picked up her first shutout of the year Saturday against Missouri State. The two have combined to post an even 2.00 goals against average with a .746 save percentage.
'Cats Roll Through Show-Me State Opponents
A weekend trip to St. Louis proved to be the gateway to offensive production for the Wildcats as NU defeated Missouri State and Saint Louis by a combined score of 14-0 on consecutive days. Northwestern's 10-0 win over the Billikens nearly matched the school-record 11-goal margin of victory the 'Cats posted against SLU in 2009. Senior defender Zoe Almquist scored three goals in the first half -- matching her career total through three seasons at NU -- while forwards Chelsea Armstrong and Nikki Parsley were each responsible for two goals. All three also had goals against the Bears on Saturday, helping NU raise its goals per game average on the year to 3.50.
Series Notes
Northwestern has a long history against Ball State, one that encompasses 23 games and dates back to 1981. NU leads the all-time series against the Cardinals 14-7-2 after winning 5-2 in their most recent meeting in 1997. The Wildcats also lead the all-time series with Miami (Ohio), taking nine of 10 meetings between the two schools since 1988. Last year, Chelsea Armstrong scored two first-half goals and Sarah Marcincin added a third as NU staved off a RedHawk comeback attempt to win 3-1 in Oxford.
