HAMILTON, N.Y. -- Out to conclude its season-opening road swing with a winning record, Northwestern dominated Patriot League foe Colgate from the opening whistle and defeated the Raiders, 4-1, Monday evening in Hamilton, N.Y. The Wildcats managed to outshoot their hosts by a 38-4 margin and received a pair of goals by forward Chelsea Armstrong for the second consecutive game.
"I liked our focus today after being on the road for five days," said Northwestern head coach Tracey Fuchs. "We executed our game plan and did a good job pressuring their defensive backs. We're enjoying being able to focus on only field hockey in these first few weeks so hopefully we can continue to improve."
Armstrong, who finished with 15 shots, netted both of her goals in the first 13 minutes of the game as the Wildcat offense maintained complete control early on. Armstrong's second score came off a penalty corner and raised her total to 26 career goals in 23 career games at NU.
Northwestern's next goal came courtesy of redshirt freshman Sherilyn DeStefano on a direct hit from just inside the circle as DeStefano recorded the first points of her Wildcat career.
After taking that 3-0 lead into the intermission, Northwestern continued to throw shots on frame at Colgate goalkeeper Kirsten Lalli, who finished with 20 saves on the night. The pressure paid off 12 minutes after halftime when junior Regan Mooney scored the fifth goal of her career to provide NU a four-goal cushion.
Northwestern's offense also received boosts from freshman Maria Kovalchuk (three shots on goal) and junior midfielder Kaylee Pohlmeyer (five total shots).
Earning the victory in the cage for the Wildcats was sophomore goalkeeper Amanda Wirth, who needed to make just two saves in her 70 minutes of action.
After its extended stay in the Empire State, Northwestern will again be packing its bags to head out on the road on Thursday. NU is set to face Virginia Commonwealth at 2 p.m. CT Friday before meeting William & Mary Saturday and Virginia on Monday.
