EVANSTON, Ill. -- The Greater Washington Sports Alliance has announced the nominees for the 2010 Tewaaraton Trophy, with three Wildcats among the 25 women vying for the sport's most prestigious award. Senior attackers Katrina Dowd (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) and Danielle Spencer (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) and sophomore attacker Shannon Smith (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) all represent Northwestern among the Tewaaraton nominees, which will be awarded June 3 in Washington, D.C.
The trio have helped lead top-ranked Northwestern to an 11-0 mark thus far in 2010, including seven victories against nationally-ranked opponents. Dowd and Smith are tied for the team lead in points (52), with Dowd leading the Wildcats with 38 goals and Smith holding the top spot in assists with 18. Spencer is right behind with 42 points of her own as the trio have each surpassed the 30-goal mark, combining for 104 goals and 146 points on the year.
All three of the Wildcats rank among the nation's leaders in a handful of categories. Dowd ranks third nationally in points per game (5.20), fourth in goals per game (3.80) and 15th in draw controls (3.40). Smith is following suit, placing ninth in the national rankings in points per game (4.73) and 16th in goals per game (3.09). Spencer has emerged as one of the country's top draw control threats, ranking fourth nationally with 5.09 draws per game while placing 34th in the nation in points per game (3.82) and 35th in goals per game (2.91).
The three Northwestern nominations ties Maryland and North Carolina for the most of any school. The Tewaaraton Trophy is an award the Wildcats have become quite familiar with past years as Kristen Kjellman (2006, 2007) and Hannah Nielsen (2008, 2009) have captured the last four Tewaaratons.
The Tewaaraton Award was formally established in August of 2000 and is the pre-eminent lacrosse award, which is given annually to the NCAA men's and women's lacrosse player of the year. This will be the 10th annual awards ceremony and is the "Year of the Seneca".
