SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- For the second-straight year, Northwestern has a fencer capture gold at the Midwest Fencing Conference Championships. Freshman Alicia Gurrieri (Medford, N.J./Moorestown Friends), the weapon's number two seed, knocked off top-seeded Allison Miller of Ohio State 15-11 to take home the individual gold among the women's sabre, highlighting the opening day of competition at the Joyce Center on the Notre Dame campus.
Gurrieri, who went undefeated in pool play, was a perfect 11-0 on the day, en route to capturing the Wildcats' first individual conference champion in the sabre since Kate Frambach in 2000. It also marks the first time since 1999-2000 that Northwestern has had an individual weapon champion in back-to-back years (Sam Nemecek captured the women's foil in 2009).
11 other Northwestern fencers posted top-10 finishes at the MFC Championships, including a pair of Wildcats posted top-10 finishes in the sabre, as senior Whitney White (Wyckoff, N.J./Ramapo) placing eighth and senior Allie Keller (Concord, Mass./Concord-Carlisle) checking in at 10th overall.
In the women's epée, Northwestern occupied half of the slots in the top-10, led by senior Kayley French (Southlake, Texas/Carroll) who tied for third-place with a 10-1 mark on the afternoon. Sister Christa French (Southlake, Texas/Carroll) finished fifth overall, with senior Sarah Henning (New Berlin, Wis./Catholic Memorial), freshman Karalina Collins (Houston, Texas/Waltrip) and junior Nicole Tilley (Chandler, Ariz./Corona) placing sixth, seventh and eighth respectively. Senior Joanna Niklinska (Granger, Ind./Penn) rounded out the impressive Wildcat showing with a 10th-place showing.
Three other Wildcats placed among the top-10 in the women's foil with freshman Dayana Sarkisova (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Central) posting a 10-1 record on the afternoon to finish in a tie for third overall. Sophomore Camille Provencal (St. Paul, Minn./Central) finished fifth while fellow sophomore Devynn Patterson (Seattle, Wash./Roosevelt) placed seventh as both fencers notch the second top-10 conference finish of their careers.
With the individual competition now in the rear view mirror, third-ranked Northwestern sets its sight on the team competition, which gets underway at 8 a.m. Sunday morning with women's foil and women's sabre. The women's foil is scheduled to begin at approximately noon Sunday afternoon. Updated results can be found by visiting the 2010 Midwest Fencing Conference Championships Central link.
