WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - Arby Fields, Geoff Rowan and Paul Snieder collected two hits apiece, but Cornell broke a 3-3 tie with a run in the bottom of seventh and then held off a Northwestern rally in the ninth to defeat the Wildcats 4-3 Sunday morning.
Trailing by one entering the top of the ninth, NU (5-12) got the first two runners on base thanks to an error and a walk. Following a groundout that moved both runners into scoring position, Chris Lashmet was walked to load the bases. Zach Morton followed with a flyout to center and Trevor Stevens was nipped at the plate attempting to score the tying run, ending the game.
Cornell (2-1) got on the board two batters into its half of the first as Marshall Yanzick connected for a two-run homer.
However, Northwestern answered right back, tying the game in the ensuing half-inning. A walk by Morton and a double by Hamilton Wise put two in scoring position for the Wildcats. A groundout by Quentin Williams plated the first run before Rowan tied things up with a basehit.
An RBI double by Jadd Schmeltzer gave the Big Red the lead in the fourth before NU eventually tied things up in the seventh with a two-out rally. Following a double by Fields, Snieder followed with a run-scoring triple to make it 3-3.
Cornell got the deciding run in its half of the seventh, though, as Brian Billigen started the inning with a triple and scored two batters later on an RBI single by Mickey Brodsky.
Both teams finished the contest with seven hits. Eric Jokisch (0-4) took the loss for Northwestern, allowing seven hits, four runs and four walks while striking out four. Matt Hill (1-0) got the win for Cornell, allowing one run over two innings of relief.
The teams are set to meet again Monday in a contest beginning at 10 a.m. Central time.
