Opening Draw
Northwestern heads back on the road this weekend, traveling to Syracuse, N.Y., to take on the eighth-ranked Orange at 12 p.m. CT Sunday, March 21. The game will be played at Christian Brothers Academy, located about four miles east of the Syracuse campus, as the Carrier Dome will be undergoing preparations to host the East Regional of the NCAA men's basketball tournament.
Scouting the Orange
Eighth-ranked Syracuse enters the weekend with a 4-1 record after an 18-10 victory over 10th-ranked Towson at the Carrier Dome Wednesday. Senior Christina Dove notched six goals, bringing her total to a team-best 21 on the year with five assists, and she also leads the Orange with 17 draws. Junior Tee Ladouceur set a personal-best with 10 points (4G, 6A) against the Tigers and is Syracuse's leading scorer with 33 points (15G, 18A). Senior Haley Quillinan and freshman Tegan Brown have both added a dozen goals to the Orange attack with Quillinan leading the squad with 12 caused turnovers while ranking second in draws with 13. Freshman Bridget Daly is Syracuse's leader with 11 ground balls while ranking second in caused turnovers with seven. Junior goalkeeper Liz Hogan has recorded 39 saves in net for the Orange with a .494 save percentage and a 8.07 goals against average. Head coach Gary Gait is in his third season at the helm of his alma mater, posting a 36-9 (.800) record.
Series Information
Northwestern and Syracuse get together for the eighth time Sunday with the Wildcats holding a 6-1 advantage in the all-time series. The Orange took a 14-3 decision in the first-ever meeting between the schools in 2003 at the Carrier Dome, but NU has won the last six, including a 19-8 victory at Lakeside Field in 2009. The Wildcats are 2-1 all-time at Syracuse, taking a 13-11 decision in 2006 and a 19-7 victory in 2008.
10 Wildcats Ready For Empire State Homecoming
When Northwestern travels to upstate New York this weekend, it will be a homecoming of sorts for a number of Wildcats as 10 players hail from the Empire State. Danielle Spencer and Beatrice Conley should feel especially comfortable as the duo are from Rochester, N.Y., just an hour and a half west of Syracuse. Katrina Dowd is from Yorktown Heights, which is roughly an hour north of New York City, while Alexa Delyra, Erin Fitzgerald, Brianne LoManto, Amanda Macaluso, Jessica Russo, Shannon Smith and Lacey Vigmostad are all Long Island products.
Milestone Watch
Seniors Katrina Dowd and Danielle Spencer continue to make up one of the most feared offensive tandems in the country as both tallied the 150th goals of their Northwestern careers against Duquesne on March 12, leaving the duo in a tie for eighth-place all-time in program history. Both now have their sights on former teammate Meredith Frank, who occupies the seventh spot with 152 career goals. Dowd also extended her consecutive point streak to 33 games, which is the 12th-longest active streak in the country, while also moving into a tie for eighth-place all-time with 45 caused turnovers. Spencer, who became the sixth player in program history to notch 100 draw controls in the season opener against Massachusetts, ranks sixth with 118 draws and is just four back of fifth-place Sarah Albrecht's 122.
