WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Day one is complete for Northwestern's contingent at the NCAA Championships Thursday in West Lafayette, Ind., with a pair of preliminary swims yielding one season-best time for the Wildcats.
Senior Kassia Shishkoff (Raleigh, N.C./St. David's School) began her 2010 NCAA meet with a season-best effort of 4:45.99 in the 500 freestyle, which bumped her up to a 40th-place finish after entering the event as the 51st overall seed. Shishkoff swam consistent 50-yard splits in the 28:00 range, cutting .64 of a second from her previous top time of the year.
"It is always exciting to see a season-best time at the NCAA Championships," head coach Jimmy Tierney said. "It can be tricky to do on double rest, but Kassia did great work leading up to the meet and we hope to continue to see results over the next two days."
In the 50 free, senior Emily Wong (Nepean, Ontario/St. Joseph's) swam a time of 22.86 during the fifth heat of eight Thursday morning, placing her 37th overall in the event. She came in as the 31st overall seed in the race.
