LAS VEGAS - Chad Noble went 4-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBI, but Northwesten dropped the finale of it four-game series at UNLV 12-8 Saturday at Earl E. Wilson Stadium.

NU (4-10) jumped out to an early advantage with three runs against Brian Gilbertson in the top of the first with Noble plating Trevor Stevens and Arby Fields on a triple. Paul Snieder followed with a run-scoring groundout to put the Wildcats ahead 3-0.

However, UNLV (13-5) answered back against Zach Morton with two runs in the bottom of the first and then added four more in the second to surge in front 6-3. Northwestern cut into the deficit in the third as Noble tripled for the second consecutive at-bat and scored on a double by Snieder.

UNLV responded again, though, as it put up three in its half of the third to give the hosts a 9-4 advantage. The Wildcats continued to battle back in the ensuing half inning as Colby Everett singled with one away and scored on yet another triple, this time by Quentin Williams. NU crept within 9-6 following an RBI single by Geoff Rowan.

Noble notched his third extra-base hit with a double to open the fifth and Snieder followed with his third run-scoring hit of the contest to get Northwestern within two.

But once again the Rebels were able to answer, scoring twice in its half of the fifth to make it 11-7. The continual scoring carried on in the top of the sixth with Arby Fields bringing home Rowan with a single up the middle.

That would be as close as the Wildcats would get, though. UNLV answere with a run in its half of the sixth and the pitchers took over during the final three innings of play. NU grounded into double plays in the seventh and ninth innings to prevent any chance of a comeback.

UNLV had 17 hits in the contest to 16 for the Wildcats. In addition to Noble's four hits, Rowan contributed three, while Snieder paced the squad with three runs batted in.

Northwestern returns to action next Saturday in Winter Haven, Fla., as it faces UMBC to open its spring break trip.
