LAS VEGAS - Northwestern had the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position in the top of the ninth but was unable to cash in, dropping the nightcap of a doubleheader to UNLV 4-3 Friday evening at Earl E. Wilson Stadium.

Trailing by two entering the top of the ninth, the Wildcats got back-to-back singles by Zach Morton and Jack Havey to start the frame. NU caught a break when with one out Hamilton Wise reached on an error to load the bases. Matt Hutchison got a strikeout for the second out before a balk moved up all three runners 90 feet and got Northwestern within a run. But Hutchison got a strikeout to end the game and give the Rebels the doubleheader split.

After winning the first game of the twinbill 20-6, the Wildcats picked up right where they left off. NU got on the board first as Arby Fields doubled with one away and scored two batters later on an RBI single by Paul Snieder.

The Rebels did most of their damage in the bottom of the second. A Wildcat errors was followed by a double by Travis Feiner, giving Indiana two runners in scoring position. Northwestern and Eric Jokisch posted consecutive outs, but Adam Koglin had an RBI single, Cash Thomas drew a bases-loaded walk and Jarred Frierson singled home the third unearned run of the inning.

NU (4-9) got one run back in the top of the third to get within 3-2. Trevor Stevens tripled with one away and came home one batter later on Arby Fields' run-scoring groundout.

UNLV (12-5) added a key insurance run in the bottom of the seventh as Drew Beurlein homered to make it a two-run cushion.

Northwestern attempted to rally in the top of the ninth but came up just short. Havey collected three of NU's eight hits. Jokisch was tagged with the loss despite striking out seven and not allowing an earned run in five innings of work.
