USFA Illinois JO Qualifier Results

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Returning to the home strips for the final time in 2010, Northwestern had a pair of fencers compete in the 2010 USFA Illinois JO Qualifier, with both of them clinching gold medals. Madeline Sachs (Greenwich, Conn./Kind Low Heywood Thomas School) finished first in the women's epée, with Emily Bruhl (Fairfield, Conn./Ludlowe) capturing gold in the women's foil.

Sachs went 6-0 on the afternoon for Northwestern, winning all four of her pool play bouts. She then posted a 15-8 victory in the semifinals and a 15-10 win in the championship bout to capture the gold. Bruhl went 1-3 in pool play, but won all three of her direct elimination matches, including a 13-7 decision in the finals to finish first in the women's foil.

Additionally, freshman Dina Bazarbayeva (Houston, Texas/Lamar) competed this past weekend in the 2010 World Cup in Burgos, Spain, finishing 14th out of 56 competitors in the women's epée. Bazarbeyeva was the ninth-highest US finisher out of the field, posting a 5-3 mark and falling to the eventual bronze medalist in the quarterfinals.

Northwestern will now get a month-long hiatus for winter break, returning to the strips in sunny San Diego, Calif., competing in its first dual meet of the season at the UC San Diego Duals on Saturday, January 8, 2011.
