EVANSTON, Ill. -- Assistant women's soccer coach Erin Ekeberg is leaving the Northwestern soccer program to return to school and pursue a doctorate in sociology, Head Coach Stephanie Foster announced Monday (Dec. 27).

One of the best goalkeepers in school history, Ekeberg spent five seasons as an assistant coach at her alma mater, from 2006-10. During that stretch she worked primarily with the Wildcat netminders, helping them record 28 shutouts including a school-record nine during the 2007 season.

"Erin has been instrumental in turning the Northwestern women's soccer program around," Foster said. "She has always been close to our program since starting out as a student-athlete here in 1997. Although she is moving on, I know she will remain a close friend and supporter."

A three-year starter for the 'Cats from 1998-2000, Ekeberg's name remains etched in the Northwestern record books, including most minutes played by a goalkeeper in a single season (2,027 in 1998). She ranks second all-time with 281 career saves and fourth with 13 career clean seets. Her seven shutouts in 1998 still rank second on the all-time single-season list. She notched 13 saves in Northwestern's 1998 NCAA Tournament Round of 16 match against eventual national champion Florida and served as co-captain and won team MVP honors as a senior in 2000.

"Erin's commitment and devotion to our program goes unmatched," Foster added. "She will be greatly missed and always appreciated for her incredible efforts. I know I speak for all of our student-athletes and alumni when I offer a sincere thank you and good luck to Erin as she moves on."
